Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken is the real thing. Not sure what I mean by that, but I knew it when I pulled up. I had heard so much about Gus's chicken that I was expecting a big sign, and a big building. Got neither. Just a small, matter-of-fact sign and a bland shack of a building. As is so often the case, nothing special from the outside meant seriously good eating inside.

Gus's chicken is spicy hot - not burn your gullet hot, but you know the spice is there. That comes from their "liquid batter" where the chicken marinates before frying. The finished chicken is a deep, almost burnt looking brown. Super crisp skin. Super juicy and moist inside. Comes with slow baked beans, cole slaw, and a couple of slices of supermarket white bread to cut the spice if needed.

As the sign in the window says, "If you haven't eaten at Gus's, you haven't eaten fried chicken."
