The
weekend before Lent and NPR was doing a feature on Paczkis
- Polish donuts baked just before Lent to use up all the
butter and eggs before the fast. Headed to
Philadelphia's Port Richmond section and to the Baltic
Bakery. Had to try them. Like a jelly donut,
but with a firmer dough. While
there a couple of guy's came in carrying that afternoon's
supply of Chrusciki - incredibly light fried dough, dusted
with sugar. Had to get a bag full. Also picked
up a sweet dough Cheese Babka and half a Poppyseed Rolled
Cake. Can't
come here on an empty stomach again.
